American Sign Language File Folder

This website has all of the information regarding a file folder activity I created, relating to English Language Arts for Early Childhood! Below is a link to why ASL is important.

About

ABOUT

This file folder helps children learn the alphabet in American Sign Language, and eventually spell out short sight words (if they are in kindergarten or above). You can gear this activity for preschool kids, and only have them learning the alphabet and doing this as a large or small group; or you can do it in kindergarten through second grade, and have the kids practice the sight words. The way I have the file folder made, you can't change the sight words easily, although it would be easy to create it that way. Next to this is a picture of the directions to my file folder, but you can change them to fit your classroom better.

Projects

Actual Example

This is the front of the file folder activity. You can decorate it any way you want, just make sure the title is represented clearly!

These are the inside of the file folder, and represent two different tasks. As stated in the directions, the left side is to practice and learn the signs for each letter, and the right side is to practice using the signed letters to spell out the sight words.

Missing in the pictures are the baggies that are attached that have cut out letters: for the left side, it'll be the regular American alphabet letters, and for the right, it'll be the signed letters.

On the back side of the folder are the directions, which can be modified to fairly fit the needs of your classroom and students.

ASL Alphabet Print-Out
(cut these into small squares and glue them to the left side of the file folder).

These are the sight words I used, but you can use whatever words you want (just cut them out and glue them on the right side of the file folder).

The directions for the back page, if you want to use mine (just cut the square out and glue it to the back).

Once you have printed and cut out the ASL alphabet and the American alphabet, stable or glue small ziplock baggies to each side of the file folder, and place the cut out pieces on the designated side.
